You may have noticed that designer collaborations have taken over the fashion industry. You may have also noticed that Canadian designers have been somewhat left out of this phenomenon. Well, we’re finally getting our chance thanks to designer Jason Wu’s Canadian roots. This week, Toronto is going to be graced with both the lovable Jason Wu and a pop up shop featuring his line for Target! On top of that, all the proceeds from the shop will be benefiting the United Way Toronto. This event really couldn’t get any better unless I become B.F.F with Jason Wu…

Back to reality for a second, on Thursday February 23rd Wu’s line will be appearing at 363 King Street West from 12pm to 6pm, or until supplies last. The shop will contain 2,500 pieces which will range in price from $10 to $45. Of course, in order to ensure that devoted fans get their fair share, there will also be a limit of only three items per customer. At the same event in NY, the pop up shop was cleared out in only a few hours, and I imagine that with the hype of seeing Jason Wu himself we will see similar results here.

In commenting on the collection, Wu notes that it is inspired by the idea of American girls in Paris. He is adamant, however, in also noting that he “didn’t want the pieces in the collection to be trendy, to scream out. It’s a little more subtle than that, there’s something quite timeless to it. I just think they’re really great pieces with their own life, worn together or separate. And in today’s market it’s hard to find something nice that you can wear to multiple occasions and keep for a long time.” Wu clearly understands his audience and acknowledges that although his collaboration with Target has “allowed [him] to reach a much broader audience,” it still excites him to be able to share the goods with his fellow Canadians.

I am happy to be one of many fans to be heading to the pop up shop for a peek at the collection. Perhaps this will be my chance to rub shoulders with Wu—or at the very least see him from afar amongst our city’s fashionable folk. Hope to see you there!

Have photos from your night with Wu? Send them to Catherine@vivemagazine.ca!

It’s not everyday that a movie starlet woos us, but front row veteran Kirsten Dunst is so entwined in the fashion industry that she’s won us over with the February 2012 issue of Vogue Italia. Surrounded by the ethereal setting of forest and rocky shore, photographer Yelena Yemchuk and stylist Leith Clark took a nymph-like Dunst from the big screen to the fairy-tale world of Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Valentino.

While it can be easy to forget that not everyone in fashion is between the charmed ages of 21–35 (or at least look it), we can learn a lot from the stories of others. The most interesting thing I learned this week? There are still good celebrity moms out there, and there are women in the 90s who still sleep in until 2 p.m. Continue reading →

A little thing called New York Fashion Week continued, and we’ve got to say we were feeling a little bit of anhedonia! Nothing was standing out to us until we saw Suno, Tory Burch, and Jill Stuart. Join our Facebook group and tell us which shows were your faves! (via fashionologie)

Lillian Bassman, the legendary fashion photographer, died from natural causes at the age of 94. Bassman was forward-thinking and incredible inspiring. Her obit has all the details of her wonderfully full life, and is a great read. (via The Guardian)

Despite all of DVF and CFDA’s hard work to keep underage models off the runway, Marc Jacobs’ show featured several. Come on, Marc! (via The Cut)

Bring on the collabs! J.Crew and Manolo Blahnik are partnering up to make the popular BB, a simple pointy-toed pump, in 41 designs. (via WWD)

Bill Cunningham, fashion photog extraordinaire and sweetest man in the world, was hit by a car while style snapping! But it’s okay folks, you can breathe easy—he walked away unscathed. (via Huffington Post)

Zelda Kaplan, women’s rights activist, fashionista, night owl, socialite, and party girl, died at the age 95 while sitting in the front row of the Joanna Mastroianni runway show. Though it’s sad to lose such an incredible woman, she couldn’t have chosen a better way to go. Instead of reading about her death, this link will take you to an article about her rich and exciting life—a much more affirming read. (via The Village Voice)

Daphne Guiness is putting together an exhibit of Isabella Blow’s clothes at Central Saint Martins, and is starting a foundation to support mental health. Guiness was close with Blow and Alexander McQueen, two fashion heavyweights who commited suicide. “I want to get to the bottom of all of this,” she explained. The exhibit will be available online, so no fashion lover has an excuse to miss it. (via Fashionista)

Did you even see those Young Versace ads with Cindy Crawford’s 10-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber? Turns out those will be her last modeling shots for at least another seven years—Crawford won’t be letting her daughter do any modeling until she’s at least 17. (via International Business Times)

Raf Simons and Rick Owens are usually what he’s dressed in.

If you predicted that opener, I’m proud of you. That’s an appropriation of one of the slickest lines in the smash single “Peso”, serving as Harlem-born rapper A$AP Rocky’s nod to every style-conscious rap fan. And in a genre inundated with off-the-cuff references to fashion juggernauts and flashy brands, A$AP Rocky managed to make a style reference that’s not only relevant but a little surprising. He’s part of the A$AP Mob; a collective of managers, stylists, producers, designers, and general movers and shakers within NYC’s underground hip hop scene. Complex Magazine recently declared, “If Andy Warhol’s Factory was relocated to modern-day Harlem, this is what it would look like.”

A$AP Rocky is the name on every rap fan’s lips and in every trendy DJ’s Serato, as it should be. After releasing the grimy and fresh-to-death “Purple Swag” and its accompanying video, both of which went viral, he released one of the most critically acclaimed and well-received mixtapes of 2011 entitled LiveLoveA$AP. It’s a stunning debut; featuring everything from smoky, slo-mo Houston homages to flows reminiscent of any number of Cleveland-based rap icons. And he recently finalized a $3 million deal with RCA/Polo Grounds. His sound is unlike anything currently making the rounds: deft and self-assured with a generous dash of ego, indifference, and immaturity. The A$AP Rocky sound is for those with style in the streets, not front-row seats at Margiela.

A$AP Rocky’s affection for fashion and his obvious style proficiency landed him a Complex cover with one of his role models, revolutionary designer and Karl Lagerfeld protégé Jeremy Scott. In a recent issue of Interview Magazine, the rapper and his crew were draped in everything from Alexander Wang to SSUR Comme Des Fuckdown to Dior Homme.

A$AP and Jeremy Scott for Complex Magazine

The A$AP Mob is connected to loads of 20-somethings making things move in Harlem and beyond, but there are a few core members of the team including Yams, Bari, Ferg, Ty Beats, Nast, Twelvy, and Ant. Bari is known to be the most style-conscious of the group, recently procuring a pair of Balmain biker boots and retorting in an interview that the current fashion-consciousness of the rap industry is a blatant rip off of SoHo and Lower East Side culture, neighbourhoods he was frequenting long before Rocky’s mixtape began making waves on indie music blogs. He’s even plotting an upcoming clothing line of his own.

Before the record deals, the buzz, and the rap money, the crew was dealing in order to fund their fixation with fashion heavyweights like YSL and Emporio Armani. Nast told Complex that fashion is what brought them all together, despite growing up in an incredibly harsh environment that stifled an interest in anything except simply getting by. And of course the guys are deep into sneaker culture, always rocking the rarest and priciest kicks. Rocky told Interview Magazine, “I’ve been into fashion since birth. I grew up in the ‘hood, and everybody in the ‘hood wants to compensate for being in poverty, so they want to look good.”

New York portrait by Ysa Pérez

The A$AP crew and their style is an amalgamation of Harlem street culture, mindless stoner braggadocio, and dreams of luxury. It was born out of desperation to differentiate from the masses and has now blossomed into yet another commercially viable extension of their art. “I wake up saying I’m going to look the best I can look and do what the fuck I want,” A$AP Rocky recently told Complex. Words to live by.
